Volunteers are needed every day in our community and you can help.  There’s no one cause for the issues we face – and no single solution.  But, when we LIVE UNITED, we can make a real difference.

 Become a Tax Preparer Volunteer!

The United Way of Passaic County (UWPC) operates the Financial Empowerment Zone or FEZ. Established in 2011, FEZ strives to lift low-income individuals and families in Passaic County out of poverty by helping them to increase their income. Through FEZ, clients are able to access: free income tax preparation, free help with FAFSA applications for college financing, free credit counseling, free benefits screening, information and referrals as well as access to financial literacy workshops.

As a volunteer, you will interact with clients by filing tax returns.  All you need is basic math and computer skills - we will provide the training (either in the classroom or on-line) which will enable you to assist each tax filer to receive the most money back on their returns.  You will be able to inform taxpayers about special tax credits that they may qualify for such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Education Tax Credits while helping to save the high fees for commercial tax preparer.  Many of our volunteers come back year after year and feel this is a most rewarding and challenging experience (in a good way!).  This is a great opportunity for college students seeking internships!   Sign up now to volunteer either daytime, evening or Saturdays during tax season which runs January through April.   Please complete the volunteer form to become a tax preparer volunteer!

Become a Volunteer Tax Site Greeter!

As a tax site greeter, you are the first person the client meets when they come to the tax site. You will help clients complete intake forms, answer questions, provide translation if you are bi-lingual, make appointments and educate clients about the other free services offered by FEZ. All greeters must pass an IRS ethics test.  Sign up now to volunteer as a tax site greeter during tax season which runs January through April  Shifts available are for:  daytime, evenings and Saturdays.  Please complete the volunteer form to become a tax site greeter!

Provide one-on-one service to parents and students serving as a guide through the FAFSA application for college financing. This is a great volunteer opportunity for a recent college graduate or someone who wants to mentor first generation students applying to college.  You can choose to volunteer during the school day in area high schools or at our tax site. We provide the training.  Get students excited about going to college while helping them make good decisions on college financing.
